Question:
Assalmualaikum,
I want to know if taking a medical insurance is allowed or not? Can you please elaborate on this matter clearly. I know that life insurance is allowed due to uncertainties involved. In the case of a medical insurance, I believe that there are no uncertainties since everything is disclosed right at the begining, e.g the premium you have to pay, the cover you will get for optical treatment etc.
In some cases, the money is not even remitted to the person paying the premium. For instance in a case where the person is admitted in a clinic, all expenses are directly paid to the clinic. The patient does not get any monetary advantage.
In light of all these factors, can you please explain if medical insurance is still haraam?
Answer:
Wa alaikumus salaam warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh
All forms of voluntary insurance, be it life insurance or short term insurance of motor vehicles, properties, businesses, houses or other assets are not permissible in Islam. These are infrastructures established by the Kuffaar whose only purpose is to deplete the hard-earned money of the unsuspecting masses and to make the poor poorer and the rich richer.
The reason is that there are two Haraam ingredients involved in insurance schemes, one being interest and the other, gambling.
The interest aspect comes to the fore when, after paying a minimal amount of premiums, a substantially greater amount is received to cover one's losses.
The gambling aspect comes to the fore due to the fact that insurance is like a game of chance: If one suffers losses in one's properties, businesses or any other assets by way of theft, fire or damage one would receive a monetary kickback from the insurance company that would be far in excess of the premiums paid in. If on the other hand, there is no loss sustained, then instead of receiving something back, one would have to forfeit the entire premiums that were paid in.
Similarly medical insurance and medical cover etc. all are not permissible too whether the money was given to him or directly to the clinic etc, because of the factor of interest, etc which is mentioned above.
If one has already insured one’s goods etc. then in the event of theft or damage occurring, one can only use that amount of money received from the insurance company which covers premiums that were already paid by him. The rest of the money should be given away to zakat-deserving muslims without the intention of any reward. It will be best to cancel all types of insurances as soon as possible.
One should forget about getting involved in such prohibited forms of insurance and place one's trust in Allah Ta'aala with the firm conviction that only He will protect one's life, health, assets and he is the only one to sort out one's financial commitments. A Mu'min should place his life, assets etc in the protection and trust of Allah Ta'aala.
AND ALLAH TA’AALA KNOWS BEST
